Name: Justin Kyle Smoak
Born: December 5, 1986 in Goose Creek, South Carolina (age 25)
History: Justin was selected by the Texas Rangers as the 11th overall pick in the 2008 draft. On July 9, 2010 he was traded to the Seattle Mariners as the centerpiece in the Cliff Lee trade. Since the beginning of 2011 Justin has been the everyday starting 1st baseman for the Mariners, who figure to have him in that role for years to come. In 2011 he hit well below his career average, batting only .234 with 15 home runs. This can be attributed to the loss of his father to cancer, two bruised thumbs, and a fractured cheek bone, all which happened within months of each other.
Update: As of Spring 2012, Justin has lost almost 20 lbs. and has been worked on getting stronger over the off-season. Half way through spring training he has posted a .357 batting average with 0 home runs in just 17 at bats. Barring the injuries or trauma that plagued him last year, 2012 should be a breakout year for Justin.
